More than 5 tonnes of marijuana kept as exhibits from 2018-2021 were destroyed at the Kadavu Police Station yesterday morning.

Seventy-six affidavits for the application for the disposal of drugs seized during the four- year period filed at the Suva Magistrates Court was granted last Friday.

More than 81,000 marijuana plants were destroyed using the station incinerator in Vunisea, witnessed by senior police and Kadavu Provincial Council representatives.

Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said police intended to destroy all hard drugs kept as exhibits following court approval for destruction.

He said by tightening up the process, officers won’t be tempted to take out drugs kept as exhibits and ensured the handling of illicit substance was done in a transparent and accountable manner.
