A 35-year-old Fiji citizen, believed to be the son of a prominent figure in Fiji, was arrested in Australia on alleged domestic violence charges last Thursday.
New South Wales Police Media Unit (Public Affairs Branch) acting senior media officer Katherine Boczynski said the man was arrested with the assistance of the Queensland Police in Brisbane, refused bail and appeared at Beenleigh Magistrates Court last Friday
“NSW Police Force detectives applied for and were granted his extradition to NSW,” Ms Boczynski said.
“Upon arrival in NSW that same day (Friday, September 9, 2022) he was charged with domestic violence-related offences and refused bail, appearing at Parramatta Local Court (in Sydney) on Saturday (September 10, 2022).”
Beenleigh Magistrates Court Service Officer Angela Wagner said the defendant had appeared before Beenleigh Magistrates Court on September 9 “being brought before our court on a warrant issued in the Local Court at Windsor NSW”.
“The magistrate made an order for the defendant to be extradited to NSW for his charges to be dealt with,” Ms Wagner said.
In response to questions from The Fiji Times, the Parramatta Local Court said the case has an Interim Suppression Order made by the court with proceedings and that “the (names of) defendant and protected person in the AVO proceedings are suppressed”.
Proceedings were adjourned to the Windsor Court in Sydney, to be heard tomorrow.
